About the founder
Xinhao Sun is a pianist, piano education researcher, and the founder of Piano Motion Lab. He earned his bachelor's degree from Xi'an Conservatory of Music and a master's degree in piano performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is currently pursuing doctoral degrees in Piano Performance and in Piano Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Kansas.
His performing, teaching, and research focus on body awareness, coordination, rhythm and movement, and musical expression in piano performance, as well as the body's role in musical perception, learning, and performance. In his teaching, he is particularly interested in how movement can help students understand rhythm, phrasing, and musical structure more naturally. Drawing on Dalcroze Eurhythmics, he explores the relationship between movement and piano learning. He also examines how digital technology can help students observe and understand their own playing and practice.
His article, Body Awareness and Movement Training in Piano Performance, appeared in The Canadian Music Teacher. He is involved in the University of Kansas's Piano Without Borders project, where he coordinates teaching activities, and continues to work in piano education.
Drawing on his experience in performance, teaching, and research, he founded Piano Motion Lab to explore connections among sound, the body, movement, and technology. Through performance audio, MIDI, video-based movement observation, and interactive musical activities, the project aims to provide clearer, more intuitive points of reference for students' independent practice and teachers' follow-up instruction.
